What You Need Before You Start

How to Set Up IPTV on an Old TV

Fifteen minutes, and no tools needed.

  1. Look on the back or side of the TV for a port labeled HDMI. Most TVs from roughly 2008 onward have one.
  2. Plug the streaming stick into the HDMI port and connect its power adapter to the wall. TV USB ports often cannot power a stick reliably.
  3. Use your TV remote’s Input or Source button to select that HDMI port.
  4. Follow the stick’s on-screen setup to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in.
  5. Install the IPTV player app and add your login, following our Fire TV Stick steps or Chromecast steps.

No HDMI Port? Use an Adapter

Very old TVs, including tube TVs, only have red, white and yellow inputs. An HDMI-to-AV converter, available for a few dollars, turns the stick’s HDMI signal into one these TVs understand. Plug the stick into the converter, the converter into the colored inputs, and power both.

The picture will be standard definition, since that is all those TVs can show, but live TV and the program guide work fine.

Why a Stick Beats an Old Smart TV

Smart TVs from before 2018 often run out-of-date systems with few apps and slow menus. A modern stick gets regular updates, installs IPTV player apps easily and has a proper remote. If your older smart TV feels sluggish, plugging in a stick is the quickest upgrade you can make.

Fixing Common Older TV Problems

The TV says “No signal”

Check the TV is on the right HDMI input and the stick has power from the wall. Try a different HDMI port if there is one.

The picture does not fill the screen

Adjust the display size in the stick’s settings, or set the TV’s aspect ratio to Just Scan, Screen Fit or 16:9.

The stick keeps restarting

It is not getting enough power. Use the wall adapter that came in the box.

Old TV IPTV Questions

Yes. A streaming stick does all the smart work. The TV only needs an HDMI port, or an adapter for very old models.
For HD TVs, a Fire TV Stick HD or Chromecast with Google TV (HD) is plenty. You do not need a 4K model.
It looks as good as the TV allows. HD sets show HD; tube TVs show standard definition.
