The Easiest Way to Get IPTV on Roku TVs

This takes about 15 minutes, and you keep using Roku for everything else.

  1. Check the back or side of your TV for a free HDMI port.
  2. Plug in a Fire TV Stick or Google TV device, and power it from the wall adapter.
  3. On your Roku TV, select that HDMI input from the home screen. You can rename it “Live TV” so the family finds it easily.
  4. Follow the setup steps for the stick you chose. It takes about 10 minutes.
  5. Switch between Roku and live TV with the input button on the home screen.

Your Other Options on Roku

If you would rather not add a stick, there are two other routes. Both work, but each comes with trade-offs:

  • Roku channel store: a handful of IPTV-style player apps appear from time to time, but they come and go and often lack a full program guide. Ask us before you pay for one.
  • Screen mirroring: many Roku devices accept a mirrored screen from an Android phone or Windows PC, and some 4K models support AirPlay from an iPhone. Picture quality is lower, and your phone has to stay on.

Why Roku Is Different

Fire TV and Google TV let you install apps from a wide range of sources, which is why they have so many IPTV players. Roku runs its own closed system, with every app approved by Roku. That keeps things simple, but it leaves IPTV viewers with very few choices.

This is also why Vizio TVs and some older smart TVs rate as Limited in our device checker: the platform, not the TV, is the bottleneck.

Fixing Common Roku Problems

Screen mirroring keeps dropping

Move closer to the TV, keep the phone awake and on the same Wi-Fi. If drops continue, a stick is the reliable fix.

The stick’s input does not show up

On a Roku TV, go to Settings > TV inputs and set up the HDMI port the stick is plugged into.

Roku IPTV Questions

Not reliably on its own. Adding a Fire TV Stick or Google TV device to your Roku TV is the dependable way to watch, and it costs less than most people expect.
Yes. The stick sits on its own HDMI input. You switch to it for live TV and back to Roku for everything else.
It works for a quick watch, but quality depends on your Wi-Fi and the phone stays busy the whole time. For daily use, we recommend a stick.
