Our IPTV bandwidth calculator tells you the internet speed your home needs to stream smoothly. Pick how many screens you watch at once and the picture quality on each, and you get a recommended speed with room to spare.
Recommended internet speed
15 Mbps
Most entry-level broadband plans can handle this comfortably.
Calculated in your browser. Nothing is sent or saved.
Choose how many screens could be streaming at the same time in your home.
Set the picture quality for each screen: SD, HD or 4K.
Read your recommended speed, which already includes 25% headroom.
Compare it with the download speed from a speed check on your TV or streaming device.
Bandwidth is how much data your internet connection can move every second, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Live TV over the internet is a steady flow of video, so each screen you watch on takes a slice of that bandwidth for as long as it is playing. Add more screens or sharper picture quality, and the slices get bigger.
That is why the calculator asks about screens and quality rather than about channels or shows. A single HD stream needs about 6 Mbps no matter what is on. A 4K stream needs closer to 25 Mbps because it carries four times the detail.
The speed you pay for is measured at the router. By the time the signal travels through walls and floors to a TV upstairs, it can be a lot lower. Busy evenings, when the whole neighborhood is online, can shave off a little more. Headroom and a good Wi-Fi setup protect you from both.
If the result is close to your measured speed, try putting your main TV on an ethernet cable and keeping 4K for the screen that benefits most. For a deeper look, read our guide to how much internet speed IPTV needs.
